St Saviour's Parish War Memorial is situated in front of the church to the left of the main entrance,

and was erected on 11 June 1921. Funded by public subscription, it bears the names of 80 young men who left their homes

to bravely fight in the Great War and never came back. Many of them had lived in the roads surrounding the church and had been members of the congregation at mass week by week.

Their names were originally carved in soft Bath stone but this was soon eroded, and for decades the names had been illegible.

For many years the names of the fallen were read aloud on Remembrance Sunday as part of the Act of Remembrance, but it wasn't until 2018 that plans were made to restore the Memorial and re-carve the names in new and more durable stone.

The restoration project began in 2018 to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War,

and thanks to the generosity of individuals and local community groups the church was able to secure additional

funding from The War Memorials Trust.

Preaching at the Rededication Service on Sunday 13 June 2021,

Fr Andrew Ferrar (Associate Priest at St Saviour’s and leader of the restoration appeal) said:
“Back in 1921 the people of this community promised to remember the fallen – most of them in their late teens and mid-twenties.

To mark the centenary of the end of the Great War we have kept that promise

and ensured that their names and their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

St Albans MP, Daisy Cooper and Mayor Cllr Edgar Hill both read lessons at a service of Solemn Evensong

led by six members of the church choir, limited by COVID restrictions.  The simple Act of Rededication followed the service, conducted by the Bishop of St Albans, the Rt Revd Alan Smith, exactly one hundred years after his predecessor dedicated the original memorial on June 11 1921.
