DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

The PCC are working on various projects to make both the church and hall buildings 'fit for purpose'

and as far as possible 'future-proofed' for the years ahead.

Top of the list is an efficient and economic heating system, disability access, toilets and kitchen utilities in church.

You can find up to date information below, which we will endeavour to keep up to date - but as some of you will appreciate, church projects generally have two speeds: painfully slow and then alarmingly fast!

NAVE HEATING

After 12 months or more of research and consultations, including advice from our Diocesan Net Zero Carbon Officer and MDP Architects, the PCC voted to accept an underfloor heating installation for the nave to provide heat for the congregation or concert audience. Professional consensus is that no one single heating solution will suffice, so this is very much phase #1, and the focus herein needs to be on heating the people rather than the vast space around them!

PARISH ORGAN RESTORATION

In recent years the Victorian pipe organ of 1898 has been brought back into to use for services. Having not been used regularly for some time it is in need of substantial repair and costly renovation.  In 2021 a working group was established to seek advice and quotations, recommend minor repairs and begin to build up a fund to enable its a full restoration. In his report to the PCC in November 2021 Andrew Lucas, the then Diocesan Organ Advisor & Master of the Music at St Albans Cathedral concluded that the organ “certainly has the potential to be one of the best organs in the diocese”.

WEST END REORDERING

Back in 2019 the PCC began to consider possible ways to make the church building more adaptable and suited to mission & ministry in the 21st century. With the parish hall in use for most of the week there is an urgent need for basic facilities in the church itself - toilets, kitchen, meeting rooms and storage.  Added to this, the provision of a permanent access ramp into the building is long overdue for services, concerts and other events. MDP Architects are working with the PCC on a scheme to create new facilities at the west end of the nave.
